Happy Father's Day!

dad says, "heya i buy you your 1st working bag la, so that you won't forget me..."
me says, "how to forget? every morning i look into the mirror also get reminded mah..."
bor bianZ la.. i really look like my dad..
as far as i remember - my dad likes basketball, photography, and gardening. the first 2 hobbies are long "extinct"... but gardening still goes strong!
he prunes and waters and snips and digs every morning... he'll comment often what is growing well what is growing bad what is growing TOO well until blocking its neighbours etc.. caught him while he pruning 九里香 (Murraya Exotica)... it won't flower properly if it is not pruned "nicenice" whor...

eh?! sounds familiar whor: John 15:2 (NIV) -"He [God] cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful." Our Father in heaven prunes and disciplines us so that we will walk in His ways and bear more Fruits of the Spirit..

today especially went to Waterloo Hill Church in Mongkok to listen to 蘇穎睿牧師 (a very famous Reverend in Hong Kong) preach on the Father's Day message: - He read out US Houston Police Department's HOW TO RUIN YOUR CHILD which I copied here:
  1. Begin from infancy to give your child everything he wants. This way he will grow up to think that the world owes him a living.
  2. When he picks up bad words, laugh at him. It will encourage him to pick up cuter phrases that will blow the top off his head later.
  3. Never give him any spiritual training. Wait until he is 21 and let him decide for himself.
  4. Avoid the use of the word “wrong.” It may develop a guilt complex. This will condition him later, when he is arrested for stealing a car, that society is against him and he is being persecuted.
  5. Pick up anything he leaves lying around, books, shoes, clothing, and whatever. Do everything for him so he will be experienced in throwing the responsibility onto others.
  6. Let him read any printed matter he can get his hands on. Be careful that the drinking glasses and silverware are sterilized and that your house is nice but let his mind feed on garbage.
  7. Quarrel frequently in the presence of children, then they won’t be too shocked when the home is broken up.
  8. Give the child all the spending money he wants. Never let him earn his own. Why should he have things as tough as you had them.
  9. Satisfy his every craving for food, drink and comfort. See that every desire is gratified. Denial may later lead to harmful frustrations.
  10. Take his part against the neighbors, the teachers, the policemen and the preacher. They are prejudiced against your baby.
  11. When he gets into real trouble, apologize for yourself by saying, “I never could do anything with him anyway.”
  12. Prepare for a life of grief. You’re in for it.
The issue is discipline, which the society shuns and lacks. we only talk abt "love, love and more love". But this is not how our Father does it - love and discipline comes hand in hand:

Hebrews 12:7-11: "7Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it."

i can't indulge into a deep treatment of the relationship between love and discipline in this already v long post.. but hope it'll set some of you thinking how we should 'love' like our Father as Christians...

anywayz Happy Father's Day Dad! and Dad! =)
